The Meaning Of Life

Thursday, January 5, 2017

I have decided that the meaning of life is finding friendships that give you a sense of belonging.

I think I've always felt like this. My Tumblr bio, the words I wrote about six years ago to "describe myself" and never changed, said: I'm Nicole. I like sleeping, reading, and feeling like I belong somewhere.

It was true then, and it's still true today.

Because that's all any of us really want, isn't it? To feel like we belong.

It's a little different than being accepted or being loved, though it encompasses those too.

To feel like you really belong somewhere is the most comforting, powerful feeling. It's knowing that when you have nowhere else to turn, you still have somewhere to go. It's establishing a home within other people.

To be able to find that is incomparable.

And finding this feeling in a friendship is different than in a romantic relationship. Finding it platonically almost feels more... genuine. Sincere. Simple. Easy.

You know what I mean, right? The dynamic in friendships is different than in romantic relationships, no matter how long you've been together. I can't explain why, it just is. And to look at another person and feel like you belong together in the most innocent, friendly way is a comfort.

If you know someone who makes you feel like you belong, if you have a friendship that just feels right, hold onto it. Because that's what life is about.
