My Travel Essentials

Friday, November 3, 2017

Today – Friday, the day this is being posted – I am flying out to Colorado to visit my friend. The fact that this post is going up on Friday means it was written beforehand which means I didn't wait until the very last minute to pack! Go me. This might be a first.

I almost always wait until the last minute to pack, and I also almost always overpack. I am indecisive about my clothes and over-prepared for situations that will not happen. I am the worst. I tried really hard this time to only pack what I needed. Surprisingly, I kept it down to only two outfits AKA the exact amount I needed, instead of packing two extra "just in case."

Aside from the obvious things like a toothbrush, contact solution, phone charger, etc., here are my travel must-haves:

1. Backpack purse

I spent months searching for the perfect backpack purse and finally found one at Target (shocker). I love it. Backpack purses are great for any time you're doing a lot of walking and don't want to worry about keeping a bag on your shoulder all day. It's especially great for traveling.

When I'm walking through the airport, or going on hikes, or walking around a city, having a backpack is easier for me than keeping my purse on my shoulder. It still holds a lot but doesn't feel like it's getting in the way.

2. Kindle/book

It's a safe bet that any time you see me, there's probably a book in my purse. Travel days are no different. Those are the days I definitely have a book in my purse.

If my trip is longer where I may get through more than one book, instead of packing multiple, I'll bring my Kindle. It takes up less space and is more lightweight, perfectly portable.

3. As little makeup as I can get away with

While I do want to look good in all of my vacation pics, packing makeup is annoying. If I brought everything I might use, it'd be a lot.

I pack as few products as possible, oftentimes just a face powder, concealer, and mascara. Sometimes I'll throw in an eyeshadow palette, or, in a pinch, I'll bring along my ISH contour kit that has contour, highlight, bronzer, and blush all together in one, and I'll use those for eyeshadow too.

Anything I do bring has to fit in my smallest makeup bag. That's the rule.

4. Face wash and moisturizer

Just because I'm away from home doesn't mean my skin has to suffer. I keep up my skincare routine even on vacation.

If you're flying, since you'll have to keep the products under two ounces, it's all about the travel-sized bottles. Target always has a ton of mini products for a buck or two. I'll bring along a face wash and will sometimes use a hand lotion, which I keep in my purse anyway, to moisturize my face for short trips.

5. Water bottle

This is another thing that I always have with me anyway but especially when you're traveling, it's a great thing to have with you. As long as you remember to empty it out before you go through airport security so you don't have to chug it in line with everyone watching, you're good.
